Great Writers Must Have Great Things to Tell

‎”You have to have something worth saying and then the ability to say it – writing is a double skill, really.”- Iain Banks

That reminds me of a creative junkie named Yoris. A mentor of Yoris told me that in 1990-s when he saw Yoris at the first time, he spotted the enthusiasm of a creative worker. Someone with freedom to think and speak and write. So daring and bold.

“He learned to write like a pro journalist. He was quite good though I have to admit his writing and journalism skills were so so,”the mentor told me. As Yoris worked as an apprentice at Hai Magazine in 1990-s, he paved his way to creative industry, which later on he found the most interesting for him to work in. Now, he is known widely as Yoris Sebastian, an author and avid innovator based in Jakarta.

It got me thinking, maybe his ability to say was average but he has many things worth saying.

Robert McKee puts it so well, that bad writers don’t have anything worth saying to tell to their readers.
